In 2022, the Denton City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan which prioritizes the development of an inclusive playground within the city. In light of this, the Lily Cantú Playground - the current playground known as North Lakes Park - was identified as the ideal location for a brand-new destination all-inclusive park, which will attract visitors from across the region.
Playgrounds are an essential component of childhood development, providing opportunities to improve physical, cognitive, sensory, and social skills. The new playground design will be ‘barrier-free’ and feature areas of play with universal design features that cater to individuals of all abilities, including those with physical and mental disabilities. These may include rehabilitation equipment, nature-based activities, and garden/landscape experiences for children and adults of all abilities.
With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, the new North Lakes Park Lily Cantú All-inclusive playground is set to become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the community, offering a safe and engaging space for everyone to enjoy.
What is an Inclusive Playground?
An inclusive playground is a playground designed so that children of all abilities can play together, including kids with physical, sensory, developmental, or cognitive disabilities.
Here’s what makes a playground inclusive:
Accessible equipment: Ramps, wide pathways, and ground surfaces (like rubber) that work for wheelchairs and walkers.
Play options for different abilities: Swings with support, ground-level play features, and equipment that doesn’t require climbing.
Sensory-friendly features: Musical panels, textured surfaces, quiet spaces, and elements for kids who may be sensitive to noise or crowds.
Social inclusion: Equipment that encourages cooperative play so kids with and without disabilities can interact together.
Safe and comfortable design: Shaded areas, seating for caregivers, clear sightlines, and easy navigation.
The goal isn’t just access—it’s belonging. Inclusive playgrounds let all children play side by side, learn from one another, and have fun without barriers.
About Librada “Lily” Rose Cantú
Lily grew up in Denton and spent much time out at the North Lakes Playground with her family. She grew a passion for helping kids from all backgrounds, which led her to volunteer at a home for medically fragile children in Peru. Lily’s family remembers her as someone with humility, an open mind, and always willing to help others.
“Lily always walked with bravery, kindness, and love”- Mari Cantú
Pollinator’s Patch is the theme for the inclusive playground inspired by Lily’s love of flowers and bumble bees—a place where everyone belongs and everyone can thrive. Just as pollinators play a vital role in helping nature grow, children of all abilities play an important role in our community. Designed with accessibility, sensory experiences, and imaginative play at its heart, Pollinator’s Patch invites children of all ages and abilities to explore, connect, and play side by side. Through nature-inspired elements, gentle pathways, and spaces that encourage both active and quiet play, this playground celebrates diversity, kindness, and the beauty of growing together.
