About the Park
McKenna Park is an 18-acre neighborhood park in Denton known for its open space, elevated views, and long history of community development. The park offers a mix of recreational amenities, including playground areas, basketball courts, and shaded picnic spaces that support everyday neighborhood use.
The park is named after George McKenna, who grew up in Denton County but later worked as an engineer in Fort Worth. Although he never lived in Denton, he developed a lasting connection to the community and ultimately bequeathed his estate for the creation of a public park.
Over time, the park has evolved through ongoing improvements and modernization. Facilities have included additions such as tennis courts, updated parking areas, and a basketball court installed in 1975, reflecting its long-standing role as a community recreation space.
The playground has also been expanded and modernized, now featuring multiple age-appropriate play zones with climbing structures, slides, a car track, beginner rock climbing elements, and zipline-style seats.
