About the Park

Milam Park is a small neighborhood park in Denton’s Singing Oaks area that provides a simple, accessible space for recreation and community use. The park includes a basketball court, playground, and basic seating areas, making it a popular spot for quick outdoor visits and informal activity.

The City of Denton acquired the land in 1976 from Jerry Simmons with the intention of developing a neighborhood park. The following year, the Park Board recommended naming the park in honor of Ernest John Milam Jr., the first Black member of the Denton Park Board.

Milam was born in 1912 and served on the Park Board from 1964–1967 and again from 1970–1972. He was a longtime employee of North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), where he worked for 32 years. He was also active in the community, including serving as Secretary of the Joppa Masonic Lodge No. 62. Following his passing in 1974, his legacy continued through the E.J. Milam Memorial Scholarship Endowment at UNT.

The creation of Milam Park reflects Denton’s broader history of park development, shaped by early civic planning efforts and the establishment of the city’s Parks and Recreation system in the mid-20th century.

Park Experience

Milam Park remains a compact but active neighborhood space, especially popular for pickup basketball games, light exercise, and casual outdoor time. Its small size and straightforward layout make it easy to access for nearby residents.

As part of Denton’s network of neighborhood parks, it continues to provide a convenient recreational outlet while honoring a significant figure in the city’s civic and community history.
