About the Park
Nette Shultz Park is a 10-acre neighborhood park in Denton that offers a quiet, family-friendly setting with open space, walking trails, and basic recreational amenities. The park includes a playground, picnic areas, and sports facilities, making it a versatile space for both active use and relaxation.
A key feature of the park is its 0.56-mile concrete walking trail, which provides a simple and accessible loop for walking, light exercise, and casual outdoor enjoyment. The paved surface makes it suitable for a wide range of users and everyday neighborhood use.
The park is named for Nette Shultz, a farmer, educator, and longtime advocate for home economics education. Born in 1896, Shultz graduated from the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Woman’s University) in 1917 with a degree in home economics. She went on to serve as a home demonstration agent, teaching families across Texas skills such as canning, gardening, animal husbandry, and nutrition. In 1944, she joined Texas Woman’s University as a professor in home economics.
In 1956, Shultz donated her 10-acre farm to the City of Denton with the vision that it would become a school and park to benefit local children. The city accepted her gift, and the land was developed into a public park that has served the community for decades.
Shultz’s legacy extends beyond the park itself. She authored a children’s book titled Isabella in 1969, reflecting her lifelong dedication to child development and education. Her impact continues to be recognized locally, including the renaming of Wilson Elementary School to Nette Shultz Elementary in her honor.
Park Experience
Nette Shultz Park is especially well-suited for picnics, walking, and relaxed outdoor time. The concrete loop trail makes it easy for casual exercise, while the playground and open areas support family activity and light recreation.
With its calm atmosphere and neighborhood scale, the park remains a welcoming space for everyday outdoor use and continues to reflect Shultz’s vision of enriching the lives of Denton children.
